Dr. Perey, James

On February 15, 2025, Dr. James Perey became the 12th president of Cochise College. Dr. Perey exemplifies the college’s mission with an unwavering dedication to serving others through a lifetime of leadership, teaching, volunteerism, and civic service. He earned a bachelor of science in agricultural education from the University of Arizona, a master of arts in educational leadership from Northern Arizona University, and a doctorate of education in organizational leadership from Grand Canyon University. Dr. Perey is an experienced educator with over 27 years of leadership and teaching expertise spanning K-12 and higher education. He is passionate about the transformative role community colleges play in improving lives and enriching communities. Prior to serving as the president, Dr. Perey served as the college’s executive vice president for academics. He previously served as the associate vice president for strategic initiatives, campus dean, and associate dean for career and technical education at Yavapai College, guiding strategic priorities and goals that focus on student success. Throughout his career he has provided leadership and innovation for various credit and non-credit programs, including academics, career and technical education, and workforce development. In addition to his professional accomplishments, Dr. Perey is dedicated to service and community engagement. He is the chair-elect of the Sky Islands Regional Partnership and serves as the county representative for the Southern Arizona Sports, Tourism, and Film Authority board. Dr. Perey is also active on several other local, state, and national boards, including the Commission for Small and Rural Colleges through the American Association of Community Colleges. A graduate of the project CENTRL leadership program, the Harvard Institute for Management and Leadership in Education, and the Aspen Rising Presidents Fellowship, he brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to his roles. An Arizona native, Dr. Perey grew up in a small rural community and proudly served in the United States Army before continuing his education. He lives in Sierra Vista with his wife, Jessica, and two daughters, Hayden and Brooke.
